How to read a birth chart, step by step
You already know your sun, your moon and your rising sign, you generated the chart on an online calculator, and now you're staring at a wheel full of symbols that look like a foreign alphabet. This is the point where most people give up and go back to reading only their sun-sign horoscope. This guide is the next step: how to keep reading without falling back to that starting point.
Step 1: confirm the big three
Before moving on, confirm you've already identified the three base points, explained in detail in our article on the birth chart: the sun (your identity), the moon (your emotional world) and the rising sign (the first impression you give). If you don't have your exact birth time yet, the rising sign and houses won't be reliable, so it's worth confirming the time on your birth certificate before continuing.
Step 2: read the other planets in their signs
After the big three, look at the remaining planets and the sign each one landed in. Each planet describes an area of your life, and the sign describes the style in which that area expresses itself.
- Mercury shows how you think and communicate.
- Venus shows what you value in love, beauty and pleasure.
- Mars shows how you act, compete and defend what you want.
- Jupiter shows where you seek expansion and meaning.
- Saturn shows where you feel more responsibility, limits or discipline.
You don't need to memorize meanings by heart. Just ask, for each planet: what area of life is this, and what style does the sign give it.
Step 3: identify the houses in play
The twelve houses divide life into concrete sectors, relationships, work, home, money, communication, among others. A planet gains extra strength when it falls in a house that's already the natural stage for its theme, for example Venus (love, values) in the house of relationships. Pay particular attention to which houses concentrate the most planets in your chart. That's usually where your energy and attention tend to converge in practice.
Step 4: look at the aspects between the planets
Aspects are the angles between two planets, and describe whether their energies cooperate or clash. The four easiest to spot on a first read:
- Conjunction (0°): the two planets merge, their energies blend into a single impulse.
- Trine (120°): easy flow, the two energies cooperate without effort.
- Square (90°): productive tension, the two energies pull in different directions and call for work to resolve.
- Opposition (180°): polarization, the two energies seem opposite and call for balance between extremes.
A chart with many squares and oppositions isn't "worse" than one full of trines. Tradition reads tension as the material growth is built from, and easy flow as the material you rest on.
Step 5: put it all into one sentence
The end goal is being able to combine the big three, planets, houses and aspects into a sentence you recognize as yours, more than memorizing a dictionary of symbols. For example: "at my core I'm [sun sign], I feel inside like [moon sign], but I show up to the world as [rising sign], and the biggest tension in my chart is between [two planets in a square]." This works as a symbolic synthesis, giving you language for patterns you already felt but hadn't named yet, without counting as scientific truth about you.
To take with you
Reading a birth chart in depth is less about memorizing meanings and more about following a sequence: the big three first, then the other planets in their signs, then the houses where they concentrate, then the aspects that link them. Done in that order, even a chart full of symbols stops being intimidating.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I start reading my birth chart?
With the big three, sun, moon and rising sign. Only then move on to the other planets, the houses they fall in, and the aspects between them.
What are aspects in a birth chart?
They're the angles between two planets. The most common are the conjunction, the trine (easy flow), the square (productive tension) and the opposition (polarization between extremes).
Do the houses in a birth chart matter more than the signs?
No layer matters more on its own. Signs give the style, planets give the theme, and houses give the concrete life sector where that theme shows up. All three are read together.
Do I need to know astrology to read my own chart?
Not in depth. This guide gives you the practical sequence, big three, planets, houses, aspects, enough for a meaningful first reading of your own, without years of study.
